Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2015: Size Matters

Prominent proportions and patterns define a sleek and strong collection

This season's Bibhu Girl epitomizes classic-meets-modern accessible style.

Dresses dominate, with patterns upon patterns -- from striking lattice-like prints to splashes of florals, anchored by a color palette of blacks and creams and gleaming neutrals.

Phillip Bloch is a fan of mixing it up -- and of the collection's striking cuts. Says the celeb stylist, "[There's] a lot of mixing in patterns, some high waists, a lot of crop tops... I like the whole high waist with a cropped top; I think it's really, really cute."

Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles agrees the designs are on trend for Spring, "Really, dresses are making a big comeback -- a lot of dresses, a lot of florals, a lot of very exciting prints."

For Bibhu Mohapatra, it's all about keeping things in proportion. "It's always about the proportion...the balance of skin to the fabric on the body, really... So it's a lot of short skirts put with really short-waisted voluminous jackets," explains the designer.

And what's new this year? What's not? "New techniques. New materials. New shapes," says Mohapatra. "It's a sort of a much more free, much more careless attitude that [the Bibhu Girl] has. But it's spirited the same."

The patterns and fabrics inspire a bold look for the hair -- dual cornrow braids weaving their way back from the forehead, across the crown, and wrapping around a sleek low bun. "We took elements from the clothing itself," says Hair Stylist Amit Abraham, "So there's silk and leather that has amazing pattern to it. ... We wanted to take something that was really like...the classic Bibhu Girl, but give her a little edge, keep her young [and] also very strong."

It's a timely look that gives every girl a chance to be a Bibhu Girl. Says model Julie Henderson, "Well, it's very feminine, but it has a very modern touch to it. And I think it's more of my style, I feel like I relate to it a little bit more."
