Spring cleaning tips, tricks and latest must-haves

From the Lifeminute team

Spring cleaning can be overwhelming, but if you tackle one room at a time, it makes the process easier. Start in the kitchen. Lifestyle Expert, Elizabeth Mayhew shares her best tricks to get your home's busiest room in check.

Go Natural
Don't swap germs for chemicals. Instead, Elizabeth suggests, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day, a natural eco-friendly and environment safe line. It's one of her favorites. They make everything from hand and dish soap to all-purpose cleaners. The cleaning collection was inspired by Mrs. Thelma A. Meyer, an Iowa mother of nine, with a no nonsense approach to cleaning. And the love of her garden is captured in the line's fresh and beautiful scents of geranium, lavender and lemon verbena. Pick them up for about $3.99 to $15.99 at grocery stores and online at mrsmeyers.com.
Everything but the Kitchen Sink
People normally wouldn't think this, but the dirtiest place in the whole kitchen is the sink! Scientists have proven that more bacteria lurk in there than on your toilet seat. Gross! Elizabeth says to scrub it down nightly with an all-purpose spray. She also likes to sanitize her sponges to avoid spreading more bacteria across the kitchen. Pop them in the microwave for a few minutes or put them in the dishwasher during an overnight cycle. Elizabeth also suggests wiping down the inside of the dishwasher about once a week.

Tidy Up from Top to Bottom

When cleaning you should always start up high and work your way down. "You want gravity to do the work for you, which is why you clean your floors last," says Elizabeth. To get that floor sparkling, skip the scrubbing on your hands and knees, instead Hoover's got you covered. With over 100 years in the vacuum biz, they also have a gem for the kitchen floor, the FloorMate. It gently and safely washes away dirt and grime with four counter rotating brushes. It has dual tanks on either side, one that releases fresh water and a biodegradable cleaner and one to suck up grime and used water. No more pushing around dirty water with that old mop. Check it out in acton at floormate.hoover.com.

Don't Forget the Fridge

The refrigerator door handle is another hot spot for bacteria. Elizabeth says to take a microfiber cloth with some solution and wipe it down nightly. You can also free up your fridge real estate by organizing the inside and tossing anything that's expired.
