Sleeper Agent Talks About Last Night

The Kentucky band kicks off a headlining tour for their sophomore album

When you think of Southern musicians, the image of a long purple-haired garage band rocker does not normally come to mind, but the Kentucky kids of Sleeper Agent have a knack for shattering stereotypes. Now, with two records under their belts, the indie 6-piece dubbed by Rolling Stone as a "band to watch" is headlining a US tour for their sophomore album About Last Night.
While working at a movie theater during their high school days, the early bandmates bonded over similar musical inclinations. "While we were sweeping up popcorn, we were also talking about The Strokes or The Mars Volta," said Tony Smith, Guitar and Vocals, "Our interests led us to eventually start several bands together, and this is the one that really took off."
With a new band came a new name, derived from Smith's love of sci-fi. "I named [the band] after the TV show Battlestar Galactica," confessed Smith.
Coming up with their name was easy compared to the creation of their latest album About Last Night, released on March 25th.
"There was never anything that was just like hit it and quit it," said Smith.
The group's front woman and only female member Alex Kandel admits their debut record Celabrasion was completed in the studio in almost a week, but this one took multiple trips back to the recording booth.
The final product consists of twelve tracks, one being the upbeat anthem "Waves."
"Waves...it's about all our traveling experiences over the first couple years of being in a band together," says Smith.
Kandel adds, "[It's about] learning places are kind of the same everywhere. You then start to see what really does make them different."
And as the band embarks on their summer tour, they are adamant about connecting with the fans in a real way. "We want to meet everybody who likes our music," says Smith, proving the rockers' Southern hospitality is still intact.
