Summer is quickly approaching, and that means skin is back in! NYC dermatologist, Dr. Anne Chapas, shares expert tips on how to get summer-ready with the latest breakthroughs in skincare!
So everyone wants beautiful skin especially in the summer time. What are some of the biggest summer skin problems and the best ways to beat them?
Dr. Chapas: Well a lot of my patients are coming to see me because they want to clear their skin of acne. They have lots of special events like graduations, weddings, reunions; you name it, in the summer. I use blue light therapy because it works but only when they can come into the office for treatments. Also, the standard treatments, including retinols and antibiotics, are not ideal for use in summer as they make skin more sensitive to the sun. Also, benzoyl peroxide can irritate the skin and stain clothing. So, I recommend blue light therapy.
How does blue light work?
Dr. Chapas: It treats acne at the source in a more natural way because it gently and effectively penetrates deeply into the skin to eliminate acne bacteria under the surface. The blue light used in dermatologist’s offices works by targeting the p.acnes in the skin and creating a simple photoreaction that causes the acne bacteria to basically self-destruct. And now you don’t have to go to a dermatologist’s office to get this same, therapeutic blue light treatment anymore. TRIA Beauty recently introduced the TRIA Skin Clarifying System.
What is the TRIA Skin Clarifying System?
Dr. Chapas: It's the only FDA cleared acne treatment for use at home that delivers the same professional-strength blue light therapy that dermatologists use. So it will save you a ton of money and time going back and forth to the doctor’s office. The system includes skincare essentials, a clarifying foam cleanser and rebuilding complex in the TRIA Be Clear Starter Kit with the blue light. All three components were designed to work together to get the best results in clearing and preventing acne without the harsh side effects typical of many acne treatments. This is the ultimate new skincare breakthrough.
What are some other tips for great summer skin?
Dr. Chapas: Always completely remove makeup and sunscreen at night. They can clog the pores and prevent any light based treatments from penetrating the skin. Pat your face dry—don’t scrub. I recommend gentle foam cleansers instead of harsh soaps. A good cleanser will also exfoliate which is key to removing dead skin cells. And use a good moisturizer everyday suited to your age and skin type to keep your skin smooth and radiant.
What about sunscreens?
Dr. Chapas: In the summertime of course sunscreen is a must, and all year around. Aside from the health risks associated with UV damage, up to 90% of the visible changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun. I urge all of my patients, regardless of skin type, to use sunscreen on a daily basis. There is a sunscreen for every skin type. Look for a sunscreen that provides UVA and UVB protection. It’s important to use an SPF of at least 30, and at least 50 if you’re spending all day outdoors.
