Gabe Saporta had never been in love. But the Cobra Starship frontman is a changed man as he sits down to talk with us about love, marriage -- to fashion designer Erin Fetherston -- and the release of his first new single in over two years.
After taking last year off to enjoy newlywed life -- and to figure out what would be next for Cobra Starship -- Saporta is back with the ironically upbeat single 'Never Been In Love.' He explains, "I spent that year trying to figure out what this new sound was going to be like and, you know, how to transition from being the guy that makes 'Good Girls Go Bad' to being, you know, Model Husband. Once we figured it out with this song, we kind of just went for it."
But the band's lead-singer-slash-reformed-playboy admits this life change wasn't a complete surprise. "On one hand, I always, I think, was going to get married," reveals Saporta, "I've always been the guy who's had a girlfriend, kind of. But I've always been kind of a playboy, so I didn't know that I would be able to leave the playboy side."
As for the inspiration behind his new single, Saporta says, "You know, one of the lines that sticks out in the song is 'You never think a random night could change your life.' And the producer I worked with, his name's Wallpaper, he says, 'Well, you know, I kind of went through something similar. I just fell in love for the first time, too.' And that's kind of how this song kind of came about."
But Cobra Starship fans needn't fear that marriage has turned the band's sound soft and sappy. Saporta reassures us, "You hear the title and you think, 'Wow, this sounds like way too sad to be a Cobra Starship song,' [but] it's actually a very happy positive song. So that's like the lyrical side of it: the random night, the falling in love, feeling like you've finally seen a 'you' you never had before." As for the musical side of it, the band borrowed a fun, familiar Fatboy Slim riff, flipped it, built a whole new song around it...and a brand new hit was born.
And Saporta says the band's comeback is flush with opportunities, thanks to their dynamic sound, "One of the things that's been great about Cobra is, just because our style is so varied, we've been able to tour with so many different kinds of bands. And people got to know us with Icona Pop, but for me, I really want to find some complete different view. And I think the challenge for me is going to be figuring out what songs fit into this vision for what I'm doing and just kind of refining it and getting the missing pieces." Adds Saporta, "So, I spend the next six months doing that...hopefully I'll have an album out next year."
Saporta's fans hope so, too. Until then, you can get your Cobra Starship fix by checking out the video for 'Never Been In Love' at cobrastarship.com.
