Jesse Tyler Ferguson was cleaning his home the wrong way.

"So everyone knows I'm a neat freak, and because I have allergies, I am obsessed with cleaning," says the star of the hit sitcom Modern Family. And so, with the arrival of Spring Cleaning season, Ferguson is joining forces with Swiffer, Febreze and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America to help people more effectively clean their homes.

"I learned from AAFA that like most of America, I was actually doing some things wrong and stirring up allergens while cleaning my home, instead of removing them," explains Ferguson, "So it's time for a Spring-tervention, people. A Spring-tervention is just really making sure that we're all doing it the right way because it's one thing to clean, but you want to make sure you're doing it the right way."

So what exactly is most of America missing when they tackle the annual chore of Spring Cleaning? According to Ferguson, whose own allergies prompted him to take on this mission, "Pay attention to the windows. Dust your blinds, your sills, your drapery hardware, with unscented Swiffer Dusters and then spray the drapes with unscented Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen Reducer. So I've always been a fan of Swiffer and Febreze products. And when I found out that Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen Reducer unscented and Swiffer Dusters and Dry Sweepers unscented are certified asthma and allergy friendly, I happily joined the cause to share this Spring-tervention with America."

It turns out it's all about cleaning smarter, not harder. "I spray hard-to-wash fabrics like upholstered furniture and decorative pillows with Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen Reducer unscented before I use my vacuum," shares Ferguson, "That way, I ensure that I'm reducing the inanimate allergens that may be hiding within and can become airborne."

And allergy-sufferers in particular should pay special attention to cleaning areas of the home that are often overlooked. Common inanimate allergens love nothing more than to hide atop moldings, window sills and baseboards, under books, and in door jambs and deep into shelves.

Ferguson recommends, "You can visit AAFA.org/certified to learn more about Spring Cleaning and Allergen Reduction. Additionally, you should follow Swiffer and Febreze on Twitter and use the hashtags #SwifferEffect or #BreatheHappy to share your own Spring Cleaning tips."

And when it comes to how his alter ego stacks up in the cleaning category, Ferguson says, "I believe Mitch on Modern Family - the character I play on Modern Family - is maybe even more of a neat freak than I am, which is terrifying. I feel like I definitely like things clean, and I like things neat and put away. I like things organized. I think he's taken it to another level."

You can catch Jesse Tyler Ferguson on Modern Family, Wednesdays at 9pm/8pm Central on ABC.
