What's one of the most awkward conversations for a guy? Hair loss.
According to a recent poll, 80% of men say that their hair is one of their most important features, which explains why hair thinning puts them on edge. But today, talking about hair loss is getting a little easier, thanks to a few laughs. "There's a lot of humor that's coming into the conversation about hair loss. Saturday Night Live recently did a really funny comedy sketch about how no guy wants to be the bald guy in the fraternity," says celebrity grooming expert Diana Schmidtke.
Rogaine Men has also partnered with YouTube influencers such has Fousey Tube and Barstool Sports to spread the word that talking about hair loss doesn't have to be a total downer. "In my personal experience, a little laugh can go a long way in making a guy feel more comfortable about hair loss. They don't need to freak out. There's a lot of options out there and, honestly, it's quite common," she says.
Here's what Schmidtke recommends to her clients who have hair loss or hair thinning.
1. Act fast. "As soon as you first see the signs of thinning or start experiencing hair loss, you need to go on treatment immediately," she advises. Her recommendation: Men's Rogaine Foam. "It's clinically proven to regrow hair and works for 9 out of 10 guys--those are some pretty great statistics!" she says.
2. Use hairstylist products with a matte finish. Toss out any high shine gels or pomades in favor of pastes, putties, volumizing sprays and dry shampoo. "Each of those types of products will actually allow you to have the appearance of fuller, thicker hair," she says.
3. The right haircut can mask thinning hair. "Have a conversation with your stylist--we are loaded with an arsenal of tools, tips and tricks! For example, a haircut with straight, blunt lines versus a textured hair or razor cutting, really helps thicken things up," she says. "You also want to go with a much shorter look," she says.
