Derek Lam takes the pressure out of fashion next fall with clothes that are comfortable.
"I totally believe in him as a great designer. He's someone who understands American sportswear, luxury and ease," Glenda Bailey Editor of Harper's Bazaar magazine.
The models seem more wrapped than dressed. Coats and skirts in heavy flannel-like fabrics with big sleeves have a heavy hand in the collection. Blankets are the new black?
"I think people are longing for much more natural .. like big chunky knits. Its this idea of being cozy, warm and comfortable."
There isn't much in the way of embellishment. Details that do stand-out include a purple/blue suede number with cut outs, a patchwork leather piece and black and white boucle.
The beauty story is anything but over the top.
"The collection is inspired by multi-ethnic cultures but for the urban woman. We started doing different hair dos that maybe seems more inspired by tribal Indian hair but we ended up having a middle part and having a really slicked down graphic ponytail that then gets teased up into a texture in the back," says hair stylist to the stars Orlando Pita.
As for make-up .. less is more.
"I wanted to keep that transparency even if its' strong eyes. We push it in a more extreme way .. no mascara .. no eyebrow and we finish with a very nude lip color," says Tom Pecheux.
