"My office is full of patients who are asking me about the latest and greatest technologies and tools to help them look and feel their best in time for the party season. In fact Allergan just conducted a survey that showed that an important family event ranks among the top three reasons why women want to look and feel their best. So luckily we have lots of things available in order to help us do so. Three of the hottest procedures we are talking about in my office right now are Botox Cosmetic, Juvderm, which is a range of different types of fillers for the face, and also Kybella, which is a treatment for that double chin," says Dr. Whitney Bowe, board certified dermatologist in NYC.
Botox Cosmetic
When it comes to Botox Cosmetic, patients say that they feel they look tired or angry because of these lines between their eyebrows, the crow's feet. Botox Cosmetic is a tried-and-tested treatment to relax those muscles so you look refreshed and well rested. It looks very natural and lasts about three to five months.
Juvderm
"Patients also come to me and say they feel they look tired and complain that they see all shadows and feel as if their face is falling down. That's a great segue to talking to them about Juvaderm," she says. There are so many different Juvderm products available now that doctors can customize and personalize an individualized treatment approach for each patient. "For example, Juvderm Voluma is great for lifting and contouring the cheekbone and that can last you up to two holiday seasons, it can last you up to two years," says Bowe. "Ultra is great for the lines around the mouth as well as enhancing the lips. And Juvderm Volbella is a new procedure that not only can help enhance the lips but can also tackle and smooth out those fine lines around the lips and it can last up to one year. So with Juvderm there is a lot of different ways we can approach lifting, tightening and smoothing the face in a very natural way that gives you long lasting results."
Kybella
Kybella is made of a molecule called deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that helps us dissolve fat. So if we eat something that has fat in it the deoxycholic acid actually enters our digestive tract and helps us to break down and digest that fat. "Kybella takes that molecule and allows physicians to inject it into that area underneath the chin so it just contours and defines that jawline. People are very self-conscious when they have that double chin and oftentimes they blame themselves saying they ate too many rich and decadent holiday treats, but actually a lot of the time it's just genetic, people just have extra fat there so it's really nice that we have a non-surgical alternative that really helps to crisp up that definition and gives you that Nefertiti jawline that people are looking for," she says.
Dollars and Sense
Sometimes patients are on the fence because of cost. "They say to me, Botox Cosmetic could be $400 plus per treatment and I need to get it done every three to five months. I tell them, think about a latte every morning. There is actually a calculation that I've done that shows that if you get one latte every day it's the same thing as getting Botox Cosmetic every three to five months. So think about all the sugar that you're drinking from that latte. Brew your own coffee in the morning for goodness sake, give yourself a reason to get that Botox Cosmetic because when it comes to putting your best face forward my patients find that it is a huge boost to their confidence when they look and feel their best," says the doctor.

Side-Effect Savvy
It's important to talk to your dermatologist or plastic surgeon about how to minimize any risks. So what are the risks associated with these injectables procedures? "Any injectables can be associated with bruising or swelling. I tell my patients they want to steer clear of things like Advil and Aleve and even fish oil supplements for about two weeks leading up to the procedure because that can dramatically reduce the risk of swelling and bruising."
