Celebrity Hair Stylist Jill Crosby is about to let you in on a little secret... Thinning hair, color catastrophes, unflattering cuts -- celebrities deal with these same hair problems that the rest of us struggle with. But you wouldn't know it from the 2015 Academy Awards red carpet, and here's why: A-listers have Jill to treat their tresses. As for you...
Well, the good news is you don't need Jill on standby, but you could use her simple tricks for treating and styling problem hair. Even better news? This awards season's looks are definitely within your reach, according to Jill's assessment of the Oscars red carpet. "I think the standout for me was how achievable some of these looks were and how excited women at home might be by watching the [red] carpet," says Jill, "Because it wasn't so avant-garde or couture that you can't go home and do some of this for yourself."
Jill's red carpet favorites? "Some of the runaways for me this year, in color, were Emma Stone -- such a beautiful hair color -- and also Naomi Watts with that blond; it was stunning. And for volume, I think Keira Knightley and Chrissy Teigen totally took it home with the volume and the soft waves. And then for cut, Jennifer Hudson by far; I thought that was chic and stunning."
According to a recent study for Women's Rogaine, conducted by Wakefield Research, 39% of women at home are going to try and recreate these looks they loved on the red carpet. To do that, Jill suggests starting with cut and color. "When you get a great cut that frames your face and works with your hair texture, 75% of the work towards styling is done. But coming in behind it with color to kind of amplify the look [and] complement the skin tone...that's going to take it even further. And if you don't have time to get to the beauty salon to get your hair colored, a little trick is that you can use a color shampoo to kind of revive the color and bring it back to life."
And when it comes to volume... Jill says, "Going back to the research, 40% of the women that we talked to didn't think celebrities actually had problems or issues with thinning hair. And they do." It turns out as many as one out of every three women will experience thinning hair in her lifetime, celebs included. Jill's advice? "For my celebrities, my protocol is I always start with Women's Rogaine Foam, 5% Minoxidil. It's a once a day use, which is fantastic, so it's really amazing. Very easy to use. And you can even find it at Walgreens. It's very easy to find, it's an over-the-counter product. So I begin there because, with more hair, I can achieve better looks; more red carpet looks are possible."
As for daily styling, Jill suggests mousses, root lifters and dry shampoos for giving thinning hair a boost. "Dry shampoo is amazing," she tells us, "We use it on the carpet all the time to get that volume and that body that we're looking for. And I caution against using too much heat. You want to really take care of your hair, so turn the heat down on the tools that you're using. Make sure that you're careful. Don't use too much tension. These are some of the tricks and tips [so] that while you're styling your hair to get the red carpet [look], you're caring for it as well."
