Be safe this summer with these doctor-approved sun protection tips.
Sun Smarts
First and foremost, sunscreen should have UVA and UVB coverage, says NYC dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner, who recommends L'Oral Paris Bright Reveal sunscreen. "Find a sunscreen that you like. Because if you like it then you'll wear it," she says. When you're at the beach, choose SPF 50 and reapply it every hour; sunscreen formulas only lasts about an hour when you're sweating or in the pool. Also, the hours of ten to two are good times to avoid being in the sun--that's when the sun is at its highest. Come in, take a nap, have lunch instead.
Eye Dos
This is the time of year to pick up a good pair of sunglasses. "Sunglasses are not only going to prevent wrinkles, they are going to prevent skin cancer because you can get melanoma on the eye as well," says the doctor. It's also a good time to pick up a surf shirt. "You can get clothing that has UVA coverage in it and my children love that. They love to throw on a shirt that has protection in it so their shoulders don't burn in the swimming pool."
Get Glowing
Some people really like a healthy, beachy glow and so they beg to have some type of color. "I embrace that. I totally get it that you want a little bit of a glow and you can do that safely. Go with a bronzer. There's a L'Oreal Paris Sublime Express bronzer that you can apply and just rinse off at the end of the day. Or you can do what I do and use a self tanner."
The idea of self tanner oftentimes creates anxiety. People think it's going to smell, it's going to be obvious or orange and streaky. Never fear; the new formulations are simple and elegant, creating a soft, beachy glow.
"There are many tips that I could share today but really what sums it up is a fabulous website called itsthatworthit.org," says Gerstner. L'Oreal Paris has partnered with the Melanoma Research Alliance to put out an essential website for sun safety tips, itsthatworthit.org. They've given up to a million dollars in the past three years to really educate consumers about sun safety.
