You know how a trip to the salon for a hair color touch-up or a visit to your favorite spa for a luxe facial makes you look--and feel--your best? Shape editor Cheryl Kramer Kaye shares her favorite drugstore buys that'll give you similar results, without having to shell out big bucks.
"One of the trickiest things to master at home is hair color because many color kits leave your hair looking overly saturated, inky and flat," says Kramer Kaye. Her solution: Vidal Sassoon Salonist Hair Color, a new permanent at-home color kit. "It's like no other kit out there because it recreates what they actually do in the salon," she explains. The Vidal Sassoon Salonist is an easy, two-step process that treats your roots differently than the rest of your hair. "First you mix up the solution in a bowl with a brush, just like they do at the salon. Then you apply the formula to your roots, where you're really going to need the most color saturation to cover regrowth," says Kramer Kaye. Next step, you add a serum to the color that is left in the bowl. As you mix it, it transforms into a glaze that you can apply throughout the length of your hair down to your tips. "This lighter glaze is what prevents the hair color from looking oversaturated. You'll get this beautiful multidimensional color. This is what they do in my 5th Avenue salon, but it costs a lot less," she says. Vidal Sassoon Salonist costs $13.99 and comes in 24 shades; available at Walmart and on Amazon.com.
"Now let's talk about skincare. There's one brand that all the dermatologists recommend to me, and that is Cetaphil," reveals Kramer Kaye. "And I know that celebrities use it too," she reveals. "This time of year, I love the Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar," she adds. This soap-free cleansing bar has five moisturizing ingredients, but is free of harsh detergents so it won't strip your skin of it's natural moisture barrier, which is vital to maintaining a youthful glow. "Cetaphil never causes any irritation, and it's really great for dry or sensitive skin," says Kramer Kaye. Cetaphil costs under $5 and is available at your local drugstore.
"At Shape, we give our readers the tools to recreate beauty looks at home," says Kramer Kaye. For more beauty tips and bargain buys, go to shape.com or pick up the latest issue at your newsstand.
