Prevention
Pre-Rinse: Before diving into the pool or ocean, rinse your hair and body with fresh water. Wet hair and skin will absorb less chlorine and salt, reducing their damaging effects such as dehydrated, rough hair and tight, itchy skin. This summer don’t let all the chlorine and saltwater and of course the sun wreak havoc on your hair and skin. Here are some quick tips to keep them both protected all season long..

Protective Ingredients: Apply leave-in conditioners or hair oils containing ingredients such as argan oil to create a barrier. For skin, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to shield from UV rays and chemical damage.

Swim Tools: Consider wearing a swim cap to protect your hair from chlorine or salt water exposure. Rash guards or swim shirts can safeguard your skin from rays and harsh water elements. Give your eyes some love too, with goggles.

Treatment

Post-Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after swimming to remove chlorine and salt residue.

Cleanse and Moisturize: Use gentle body washes to avoid further stripping natural oils. Slather on a rich moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin to replenish lost moisture. You can also apply body lotion with antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin E to help repair your skin.

Clarify and Condition: Use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine and salt buildup, which can cause brittle hair and color fading. Look for products with ingredients such as sodium citrate or a gentler option such as apple cider vinegar. Add deep conditioning treatments or hydrating hair masks with ingredients such as shea butter into your routine weekly to restore moisture and mend any damage.
