Pointers for getting the perfect pout

Pucker up because it's National Lipstick Day on July 29th. But getting the perfect pout requires some skills. Here are our best pointers for applying lipstick.

Moisturize
Always start with a thin layer of lip balm to moisturize and even out your lips.

Line
To get the appearance of fuller lips and increase precision, start with a lip liner. Lightly outline your lips using a liner that matches your lipstick color. For more difficult spots like your cupid’s bow, you can draw an “X" down from it. Make sure you know where your lower lip line ends. To line perfectly, you can use a tool like an index card or sponge around the edges.

Lipstick
Open up your mouth slightly and relax your face. Layer on lipstick from the center outward, filling in your lips to the lip liner. Create texture by using a matte liquid lipstick, then apply regular lipstick over it. If you want to make your lips look extra pouty, use a slightly lighter lipstick on the center of your lips than you do at the edges.

Blot
Take a facial tissue and fold it in half. With the folds facing you, bring it between your lips and press your lips together lightly to evenly distribute color.

Clean
If you’ve overdrawn your lips a little or made a mistake, you can clean up the line with a bit of moisturizer or makeup remover saturated on the edge of a cotton swab.
