The Affair's Shocking Death

Why one of the show's main characters was killed off...

Last night's episode saw the shocking death of Alison Bailey (Ruth Wilson), an event that fans of the Showtime drama did not see coming. So why would the writers choose to kill off one of the major characters? The answer is simple; Wilson wanted to leave the show. Showrunner Sarah Treem told the Hollywood Reporter that they shot all of the English actress's scenes first, "Her whole storyline was shot before we shot anything else."

And although the explanation for Alison's death makes sense, her suicide still leaves viewers with many questions. However, there are still two episodes left in the 10-episode fourth season and as confirmed by Showtime last month, a fifth and final season to give the audience insight into her untimely death.
