Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Beloved Actress Diane Keaton

Steve Martin, Jane Fonda, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and more took to social media to share heartfelt tributes to their late friend and co-star

In the days following her unexpected passing, stars of the screen and stage have taken to social media to mourn the loss of legendary actress Diane Keaton. Keaton passed away on Saturday, October 11 at the age of 79 following a string of health issues, according to sources close to the actress. An official cause of death has yet to be revealed.

 

She was best known for her work in films such as Annie Hall (for which she won an Oscar,) The Godfather, The First Wives Club, Baby Boom, Something's Gotta Give (said to be her personal favorite,) Because I Said So, And So It Goes, and Book Club, to name a few. 

 

Aside from her work on screen, Keaton was a vocal talent with a passion for singing, and had just released her first Christmas song “First Christmas” just last year.

 

Book Club co-star Jane Fonda shared a heartfelt tribute to her friend on Instagram, writing “She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view.”

 

Actress Bette Midler, whom she starred alongside in The First Wives Club, writes “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star.”

Goldie Hawn, who also starred in The First Wives Club, wrote “We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends. Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss the hell out of you.”

 

Father of the Bride co-stars Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, remembered their friend. Williams-Paisley referred to her as “one of a kind,” while Martin shared an excerpt of an interview between himself, the actress, and Martin Short, where Short asked Keaton “Who's sexier? Me or Steve Martin?” and Keaton responded, “I mean, you're both idiots.” Martin captioned the post, “Don’t know who first posted this, but it sums up our delightful relationship with Diane.”

 

The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola reminisced on her many screen performances, saying “Everything about Diane was creativity personified.” Kind words were also shared by fellow Godfather alum and Book Club on-screen boyfriend Andy Garcia, who called Keaton “magical.”

 

Mandy Moore, who played Keaton’s daughter in Because I Said So, referred to the actress as one of her heroes, writing “They say don’t meet your heroes but I got to work with one of mine and even call her “mom” for a few months. An honor of a lifetime.”

 

Reese Witherspoon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rosie O'Donnell, Nia Vardalos, Cynthia Nixon, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Zac Posen, Jeremy O. Harris, Piers Morgan, and Melissa Gilbert were amongst others to share tributes for the late, great, actress.
