Fresh across the pond, singer-songwriter James Bay is making a splash in the US with his cool sound and personal lyrics. The 22 year-old UK native released his EP, Dark of the Morning in July and is setting out for a six-week tour in September.
The young musician's sound is a modern mix of his icons' Carole King, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Jackson Browne. However, he didn't get his start in music until just recently. "I was at school when I started playing guitar and I fell in love with it really very quickly," he says.
Bay didn't waste anytime getting started and began writing a slew of songs straight from the heart. He hopes to keep all his music "real and organic sounding."
"The whole EP and the name itself The Dark of the Morning it's all very personal stuff. I guess its all very honest therefore hard to talk about sometimes."
One of the EP's singles, "Move Together" was written about a very specific night in his life, "I found out that those make the best songs the things that are real to me" he says.
With an influx of positive feedback and even a comparison to his idol James Taylor, it seems that his music means something to his fans as well. "The response has been amazing...you know so many amazing things have been said about it by people who picked it up and listened to it."
So what does the future hold... "I start a six-week tour and it's my first proper tour."
Bay says he's excited to start his US tour with ZZ Ward and plans to explore "every place we stop and play, its going to be really cool."
Really cool indeed.
