How to Whip Up Creamy Classic Hot Chocolate and White Hot Chocolate

National Hot Chocolate Day is January 31st. To celebrate, cozy up with a traditional hot chocolate recipe or a version with white chocolate.
Classic Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
4 cups milk (2% or higher recommended or substitute half and half, heavy cream, or a mixture)
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips
¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping (optional)
Instructions:
Stir together milk, cocoa powder, and sugar over medium-low heat in a small saucepan. Whisk frequently until simmering but not boiling. Add chocolate chips. Whisk constantly until chocolate chips melt and distribute evenly into the milk. Whisk in vanilla extract and serve immediately. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.
White Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
4 cups milk (2% or higher recommended or substitute half and half, heavy cream, or a mixture)
8 ounces white chocolate chopped into small pieces
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping (optional)
Cinnamon and nutmeg (optional)
Instructions:
Stir together milk, chocolate, and vanilla over medium-low heat in a saucepan. Stir occasionally until white-hot chocolate is simmering but not boiling. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows or sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.
