It’s National Avocado Day and to celebrate the green fruit here are some expert tips for shopping, preparing and keeping them fresh.
Pick the perfect one
If you’re shopping a day or two ahead, find the ones that yield to gentle pressure and store them in the fridge until you’re ready to use them. If they aren’t ripe yet, you can speed up the process by placing them in a brown paper bag with a banana or an apple. The natural gasses in the fruits help the avocado ripen faster.
Cut like a pro
Use a sharp knife to cut the avocado in half by slicing through it lengthwise. Then rotate it, keeping the knife steady, to make a cut all around the pit. Twist the two halves apart then scoop it out with a spoon.
Keep in fresh
Use lime or lemon to not only add taste, but help preserve guacamole or open avocados for an entire 24-hours. Store any leftovers in a small, airtight container in the fridge or gently brush them with olive oil and wrap them in a plastic wrap before storing.
