Who doesn’t adore pizza? Model Emily Ratajkowski, singer Sarah McLachlan, the Jenner girls, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen don’t mind getting snapped by the paparazzi having a pie. If you love pizza too, here is a little history, a few fun facts and a shortcut for making your own at-home.
Pizza’s modern birthplace is Naples, a bustling waterfront city in Italy in the 1700s and early 1800s. The working class needed something that could be made quickly, sparking the invention of the flatbread with tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies and garlic. Pizza was looked upon as a lower class dish until, according to legend King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889. The Queen, bored with her diet requested an assortment of pizzas from the city’s Pizzeria Brandi. Apparently, the Margherita style was her favorite, hence the name. Many believe the royal interest in pizza caused the country-wide spread of the now ubiquitous staple.
Today the range of pizza is almost unlimited as well as the caloric intake. A thin slice is around 155 calories, a New York style cheese pizza slice around 190 and a Chicago deep dish slice can be as much as 640 calories.
If you want to make your own, you don’t need to make the dough from scratch just visit your local pizzeria to buy a dough. Throw it on the grill or in the oven with your own favorite toppings and for just a fraction of the price.
