The designs at A.F. Vandevorst were a glamorous gust of fresh air, with the hemlines of dramatic voluminous ball gowns appearing as if blasted from below with a whoosh of wind, then frozen in space and time.
One half of the husband-and-wife duo behind the brand, designer Filip Arickx, tells the story of the collection, "It's about a woman who's in a plane, finally sees a spot, comes down with the parachute and starts to explore and [has] the movement of the air when she comes down in the fabrics and freeze that moment."
Even the hair was styled to be an extension of the story, with 'dos adorned with grass and feathers. "[She] starts to pick up some grass from down [on the ground] and puts it in her hair, just like dreaming," says Arickx of the I-just-landed look.
The story continued with feather-light fabrics, like wispy silks, lending an airy effect and providing a satiny base for the crispier fabrics layered upon them, while sleeker looks and smart skirt suits in olives, blacks and reds offered more practical fashion reprieves from the wonderful whirlwind.
Color had an important role in this tale as well in the designs' magnificent descents. Designer An Vandevorst explains, "We start with the more Army olive colors, then it turns into dark feather prints, and it goes very light, and then we have like a moment of very bright flame reds, and it's almost electric."
To complete the story, the look for the face was light, ethereal and radiant. Vandevorst adds, "Pale, like she was glowing, very feminine."
...And all the daredevil fashionistas who will be spending Spring in fabulous freeze-frame fashions lived happily after.
