Embellished brocade, oxblood plaid and the glitz of gold commanded attention at Badgley Mischka in a collection comprised of conservative day looks, stunning sheath dresses and dramatic ball gowns with ornate detailing.
"We're kind of taking a Spanish theme this season, inspired by a movie called Blood and Sand," says Designer James Mischka, "The movie was filmed in Technicolor; it was one of the first Technicolor movies, and we're kind of making the show look like a film. We took the oxblood color for a lot of our day clothes, and we turned the sand into gold."
The hair and makeup was equally bold and dramatic, with a modern twist, as Makeup Artist Tom Pecheux explains, "For the makeup, I wanted to have a powerful woman, so it's a Spain-meets-Amy Winehouse. The eye liner is finished not with a point but more square, and the edge is an ink blue color like a feather."
And for the hair... "We're not looking for a smooth kind of finish," says Hair Stylist Peter Gray of the half-up, half-down textured and teased look, "We're looking for little bits of gaps. Just take two bobby pins and crisscross them. We put these little Japanese serrated hairpins in them."
But it was the introduction of silk honeycomb gazar into the collection that stole the show, evoking an era of Old Hollywood glamour and the dramatic elegance Badgley Mischka is known for.
