The holidays are the perfect time to pop the question -- just ask the 25% of all couples in the U.S. who get engaged during this festive time of year. To help this season's crop of new brides-to-be pick the perfect gown, Bridal Designer Melissa Sweet pulled together the hottest looks for 2014 from David's Bridal.

Colorful Gowns

Who says you have to wear white? This year, brides are opting for skin-complimenting tones such as blush and champagne for their nuptials. "Girls don't always feel their best in white and ivory," says Sweet, "so this is a great option."

Vintage Detailing

For the traditional "something borrowed," brides can bring forward fashions past by choosing styles embellished with vintage-inspired lace and beading. Sweet says she loves the "idea of taking fabulous things from bygone eras and incorporating them into modern dressing."

High-Low Hemline

"Now, speaking of times gone by, the high-low hemline we saw in the '60s and '80s is making a comeback that gracefully translates into bridal dressing perfectly," says Sweet. Take, for example, a Galina gown with a tulle overlay, epitomizing the high in the front, low in the back style that offers a perfect little peek of a shoe.

Alternative Neckline

"Brides are loving the opportunity to choose a new neckline," says Sweet, "and while strapless remains popular, an alternative neckline is a great way to get a little bit of extra coverage with a sleeve, a strap gracing the shoulder, or even a net on top."
