At Derek Lam, urban elegance prevailed, with a touch of 70s flair...as in a literally flared pant and retro ribbed turtlenecks.
Hair Stylist Orlando Pita set out to create the same flared look for the hair with a style, he explains, that is easy to take off the runway and recreate in the real world. "The collection is quite architectural, and there's a pant that goes out in a flare. We're doing a simple ponytail but I want it to go out in a flare, too," says Pita, "So first we're blow drying the hair with the Phytovolume Actif Spray or the Intense Volume Mousse. I like to take a little bit of the workable hairspray, spray the hair back so it keeps the hold, but it also keeps a natural quality that doesn't look too brushed. The reason why we can do hair backstage fast is when we have a good arsenal of products, and I think Phyto supplies us that. Then when people use it at home, they realize that it makes their time styling their hair a lot quicker, too."
As for the makeup... "Looking at the collection, Derek was looking for a very quite soft makeup," says Makeup Artist Tom Pecheux, "You know, we curl the lashes but no mascara. We leave the eyebrow pretty natural, no blush, no contour, and kind of a nude lip."
But it were the classic trenches that stole the spotlight, given modern updates like spacious hoods or dramatic stand-up collars. Still, the overall effect was perfectly subtle, according to Glamour Magazine Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive...
"Beautiful fabrics, great fabrics, but not too retro [in] shapes," says Leive, "It really looked fantastic."
