After being asked to design costumes for Richard Strauss’ Elektra opera performed at the Washington National Opera in September, Bibhu Mohapatra turned to the main character as his muse for his fall/winter 2022 collection’s inspiration.
"It sort of came from that muse of how strong she was and how she's all about change...change the status quo. And all of the trailblazing women that have in the last fifty years, have fought for women's rights and equality...the fight is not over," the India-born designer told us backstage at his NYFW runway show.
He calls his latest collection “elevated,” mixing Bibhu classics with architectural shapes, draping, color blocking, and embroidery. The fabrics are softer and lighter for fall, such as silk, and transition from cooler to warmer weather effortlessly, but also day to night.
Also there, model Pritika Swarup and Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu. And model Beverly Johnson, the first Black woman to grace the cover of Vogue in the '70s, walked the runway.
