NYFW Spring 2014 / Carolina Herrera: Optical Illusions

The visual effects of layered materials at Carolina Herrera leaves the front row thinking they'd had too much coffee

Carolina Herrera creates a sideshow of fabric play for spring '14.

"When you take the materials and you layer one on top of the other you create a literal multi-dimensional experience to look at the materials moving ... that's visually important ... and I'm very happy with it," says Carolina.

Organzas with microscopic stripes leave a trippy trail on the catwalk that has the front row thinking they drank too much coffee.

"I use organza and chiffon and cotton and it's a very soft collection because of that."

It's also a very evening-heavy collection. Herrera favors floor-length gowns over casual separates like trousers. Her colors are brown, a play on purple and citrus. Black and white also has a moment.

When it comes to hair .. Herrera likes it twisted and tight.

"The hair is very sculpted because it has to go with the look."

Her make-up moves are very different too.

"There are a lot of lashes. Make a girl look very fresh and beautiful."

But the designer keeps it fun with floppy sun hats and feather details to keep the younger Hollywood set interested.

"I'm a long time fan of Carolina. I think she's beautiful, classic and amazing. I wanted to come here and see every beautiful thing she made," says Christina Hendricks, actress.
