Not every show during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week involves established designers, for some it's a chance to get pinned as the next big label.
"This is really all about celebrating the new rising talent in our industry," says sponsor Buxton Midyette.
Supima, known as America's luxury cotton, hosts their 6th Annual Design Competition at Lincoln Center. Star students from four of America's top design schools slug it out on the runway. Each has five outfits to impress with.
"It's very inspiring to see new designers, young designers who want it so badly and they work so hard," says veteran designer Douglas Hannant.
Contestant Bradley Mounce drapes heads in burka-like hoods and also plays with pattern.
"My inspiration for the collection is a mix of midevil gothic and peeling paint and the erosion of time," adds Mounce.
But while Mounce dipped in red competitor Will Riddle sticks to black.
"For me it's black but I'm balancing it with a bunch of mettallics. I've tried to put different finishes, use technology because I really think that's where fashion is going," says Riddle.
The show has a rich mix of fabrications from a sequence ombre look to leather details and the model's faces are careful not to compete with the clothes.
"We're doing a lot of blending and mixing of tones to get the tone that's right for the girl in the chair," says Chantel Miller, makeup artist.
The female students really celebrate spring hues compared to the boys from pinks to shimmery ocean hues.
"My inspiration was sculpture and construction and how materials will naturally take form. It's all about shapes and how things work together," says designer Carly Rosenbrook whose dresses have signature raw seams and puzzle like patchwork.
Meanwhile backstage, hairstylist Jon Reyman is all in a twist...
"We want it to look like a braid but not exactly like a braid. It's a little looser and a little softer and it still has an elegance to it," says Reyman.
Contestant Morgan Selin keeps it cool for the competition ...
"My color palette for the whole collection is dark shades of blue, mixed with kind of a steel gray, slate blue and the silver," says Selin.
Her color picks and punk-influenced lines prove to impress.
"As a judge I'm looking for passion and if I don't see that I feel like how can I trust you as a designer?" says June Ambrose, Stylist.
Selin earns the trust of all the prestigious judges. After a nail biting show, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe makes the big announcement:
"And the winner is ... Morgan Selin !"
Look for that label coming to a store near you ...
