Get fabulously lost at sea. Stand your ground in rich beiges. Feed your need for colorful chaos. The Spring 2015 collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week let you see it all, do it all, wear it all.
"I was really looking at the idea of creating the look of a woman coming out of the water," says Thakoon Panichgul of the rippling, silken pieces flowing down the runway at Thakoon, accentuated by slick hair and a neutral nail. "It was important for it to look [as if] it was almost like water sort of passing through the nail," shared the designer.
It was a shimmering sea of crystalline greens, deep navies and sparkling silvers at Christian Siriano, where the looks were inspired by the work of glass sculptor Sergio Redegalli. "All of his works are bodies of water," says the designer, who capped off his collection with a bright white confection of a ball gown that had Amy Schumer feeling swept away.
"The clothes are so beautiful. They like, fulfill...a childhood fantasy about being a princess," marveled the comedian.
An ocean away at Libertine, the rule of the day was there are no rules, at least not when it comes to Johnson Hartig's "More is More" Spring collection.
"More pattern, more color, more embellishment," says Hartig of the fashion free-for-all, where sunglass-sporting models frolicked down the runway in layers upon layers of vibrant color, loud patterns and "really exciting new fabrics."
While at Derek Lam, the designer is bringing beige back with a simply sophisticated collection dominated by rich browns and soft purples, mixed with playful patchwork and punctuated by big buttons. Textured hair completed the smooth, clean look, "Just to add a little flyaway [to the models' hair] as they're walking," says hair stylist Orlando Pita.
In attendance was Harper's Bazaar's Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey, who predicts for the season, "I think we're going to be seeing a lot of pale khaki or biscuit color."
But if the collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week are any indication, no color will be neglected this Spring.
