Rebecca Taylor, Girl Meets Boy for Fall 2013

At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, downtown designer Rebecca Taylor turns tomboy.

"This show was really inspired by various influences ... a little bit British punky, it's kind of like we've got a girl coming out of CBGBs in the 70s and she's cold so she puts her boyfriends big really structured double breasted coat on or biker jacket. So, it's real -- boy meets girl," says Taylor.

And the meeting goes well -- shearling collars, zipper embellishments and heavy coats flirt with flowy chiffon.

Boys are big for Taylor -- she admits her proportion play is inspired by architect Frank Llloyd Wright's modern classicism. His stained glass windows reflected in her color palette of blue, plum and teal. But I'm sure Frank didn't spent this much time on his hair...

"Blowdrying it, flat ironing, a sort of messed-up, greased, rocker hair and then one hand through just to beat it up so it's not too perfect," Kevin Ryan, hairstylist.

The slicked back styles pair well with flippy feminine skirts and loose blouses.

Despite all the references to the opposite sex in the collection no one questions Taylor's girl power.

"I think that her clothes are very strong and very feminine and I think it's really cool when designers embody what that actually means ...to be a strong female," says actress, Shailene Woodley.
