This Spring, newcomer Emily Saunders encourages us to get out our neons and prescription meds, delivering feminine-rocker designs, such as sweaters emblazoned with pill capsules paired with pink floral skirts.
"Spring is going to be really exciting...lots of florals, neons...it's a really fresh, fresh collection. I'm really excited," says Saunders.
A non-runway venue set the scene for the presentation of this debut collection from Saunder. "The inspiration was a 1968 song called "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and I went to that initial inspiration to really having this concept of a rock-and-roll Garden of Eden," says the designer.
Moto jackets sprung up in groovy colors, from lime green to pink metallic, complemented by makeup on the models that evoked a vibe of good girl gone bad.
Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes says of the look, "She's a 1960 rock-and-roll Garden of Eden girl. So she's very very soft and pretty, but then she's sort of grungy and hard, and kind of very... she's very real. So it's a big glossy black eye, cool matte lip and matte velvety skin."
Color-blocked dresses, printed snakeskin and silver shoes sparkled, but white was another highlight. Gorgeous gowns with plunging necklines and peephole cutouts looked as if they could walk right off the runway and onto the red carpet.
"The accessories...we made this really like awesome collection: pills and snakes and flowers as well," says Saunders. "So it's like, this sixties Valley of the Dolls Garden of Eden thing going on."
And what's a garden without beehives?
Hair stylist Nunzio Saviano explains, "So the look is a beehive, and we incorporated the beehive with a French twist. Very easy to do."
The shape of the hair mimicked the pill capsules.
"What I did was separated the top with the sides, pulled the sides into the back into a French twist, and I love..especially with the bangs...just gives a great 60s look. I think it's going to play beautifully with her colors and her dresses. It's going to all tie in quite well," adds Saviano.
Fashionistas will likely OD on Saunder's cool, colorful collection.
