Fashion Week is about cool clothes, competition and the next style star

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has only just begun but already the best dressed and the best designs are being honored at the Style Awards.

"Style is really the root of fashion. It's more enduring than anything fashion that we do," says John Varvatos, crowned Menswear Designer of the Year.

But when it comes to pulling together a look ... or pulling off a rad ruffle ... most red carpet regulars have a secret weapon...

"Stylists are such an integral part of people's lives. There are two things we do every day: we eat and we wear clothes," says Lawrence Zarian, Style Expert & Personality.

Rachel Zoe and Catherine Malandrino may not look like they eat much but their plates are full.

"When art and commerce come together it's really important to celebrate the leaders and the people that are really going for it," says Designer of the Year, Zac Posen.

Max Azria really goes for the gamut with his BCBG collection -- funky to fancy. Just ask Heidi Klum.

"I wear Max's clothes a lot ... ya know because you can look like Rock n Roll ... like what I have on today ... or tomorrow for our big Project Runway finale I have a beautiful gown," says Klum.

Nightgowns inspire Rita Vinieris's spring dresses.

"The inspiration was the space between boudoir and black tie, creating a dress that's got simplicity yet sensuality for the woman that wants to make an entrance," says Vinieris.

Models also make an exit -- landing at the bottom of a staircase with a spin to reveal surprising lace details down the back.

Surprises are what keep the fashion world on it's toes. A wardrobe malfunction. Hair color change. And new blood.

"It's very inspiring to see new designers, young designers who want it so badly and they work so hard," says Douglas Hannant, designer.

The 6th annual Supima Design Competition is where rookie talent steps-up to the style plate and hopes their blue splashed dress or frock with futuristic details takes home the prize.
