Book Review: Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed
I was so excited to read this new book by Sonia Choquette. I've been a fan of hers for years and have read many of her books, gleaning much wisdom from her words. Since I do love a book about a journey, it was with great eagerness that I dug right into Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed.
Although Sonia is an intuitive healer and spiritual guide who has helped hundreds of others, when it came time to helping herself, she fell short. Carrying emotional baggage from when she was a young child, Sonia had feelings of bitterness and anger buried so deep that she wasn't even aware it was there -- until she set out on the pilgrimage known as the Camino de Santiago, an 820-kilometer walk across the Pyrenees and northern Spain.
Alone, carrying only a backpack and her token Gumby, Sonia faced inclement weather, hunger, tight shoes, blisters, exhaustion and just about everything else you'd expect while hiking 500 miles. Discomfort aside, Sonia took the time of solitude and beauty to revisit her past and gain an understanding of her father, who had recently passed away, as well as think about her brother who had also passed.
Day after day, Sonia gave herself over to the power of the Camino and ended up in an emotionally new and different place, a better place than where she started. The healing and magic of the Camino de Santiago made me want to pack up a bag and head to Spain! If you aren't able to head off on your own journey, you can gain some clarity and insight from Sonia's trip.
