National Lemon Juice Day is August 29. Here are natural ways to use this citrus fruit to freshen, clean and more.
Extend Life of Your Fruits and Veggies
Research shows citric acid in lemon juice can slow the browning of certain fruits and vegetables like sliced apples, pears, and avocados, which begin to oxidize when enzymes through the cut produce are exposed to oxygen in the air. To preserve, squeeze or spray a little lemon juice directly onto the surface of the sliced produce and refrigerate in an airtight container.
Get Rid of Stains and Odors
Rub the cut side of a lemon over your wood-cutting board. For extra cleaning power, sprinkle it with salt or baking soda first. Wipe the wood board with mineral oil to seal it afterward.
Deodorize the Drain
Run a few lemon rinds (or used lemons) through the garbage disposal to reduce sink stink and keep it clean.
Brighten Plastic Storage Containers
Eliminate stubborn stains like one left by red sauce on your food container by rubbing one-half of a cut lemon around the inside while squeezing the juice out. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse out the container.
Get Crafty
Instead of using bowls, serve shells. Hollow out lemons and scoop store-bought sorbet into the homemade shell cups for a refreshing twist. To create, cut a sliver off one end of the lemon that will serve as the bottom to help make it sit flat. Next, cut a larger slice from the other end to create the top of your cup. Using a serrated knife, slice around the inside of the pith. With a spoon or melon baller, scoop out the inside of the lemon. You can reserve and use the insides for something else, like lemonade. Cover and freeze the shell cups until ready to use.
Make a Natural Air Freshener
Fill a pot with water and sliced lemons to add a refreshing aroma or neutralize cooking smells. Let it simmer on the stove for about 30 minutes.
