Etiquette 101: How to Set a Proper Place Setting

Ho ho ho ‘tis the season to set the holiday table, here’s the scoop on how to do it, assuming you have all of the formal plates to do so.

-Layer your plates, starting with dinner plate first

-Add the salad plate next

-Add the soup bowl on top

-Place the bread plate above to the left hand side

-Place the forks to the left, set it in the order it will be used, from the outside (farthest from the plates) in (salad, main course, dessert)

-Knives and spoons to the right, starting with the knife closest to you, spoon farthest away

-Place water, wine and champagne glass to the upper right corner of the place setting (water glass should be closest to the plates)

-Coffee cup can be set above the glasses to the right

-Place the napkin on the plates or underneath the forks
