Today marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and to honor those who have fallen, Lt. Drew Kane of the FDNY, swam 29.2 miles around Manhattan yesterday to raise awareness for “First Responder Mental Health.”

The lieutenant says he is "swimming to continue to raise awareness. Mental health should be treated the same as physical health. The men and women that make up our first responders, military, and healthcare workers receive acknowledgment in times of tragedy. However, these individuals are consistently under enormous amounts of stress as they respond to traumatic incidents in our communities 365 days a year. My hope is that awareness of the mental health needs of the first responders in our communities will continue to grow."

Kane completed his swim in Battery Park where he was cheered on by his peers.
