How to Make a Homemade Piñata

A fun and easy DIY for your next fiesta

A fiesta favorite, the piñata is not something you need to run to the store to buy anymore. Here is an easy way to make your own festive one at home. You might have just as much fun making it as you do breaking it open.

Step 1 - Mix one part flour with one part water to make a paste

Step 2 - Blow up a balloon and seal it

Step 3 - Tie a piece of string to the balloon 

Step 4 - Cut strips of newspaper

Step 5 - Dip strips into paste, removing any excess moisture

Step 6 - Paste strips to the balloon

Step 7 - Leave a small space at the top of the balloon (opposite end of the string) for a hole to fill the piñata later

Step 8 - Repeat steps 5 and 6 to create three to four layers

Step 9 - Hang the balloon overnight to allow the strips to dry

Step 10 - Decorate the balloon

Step 11 - Pop the balloon 

Step 12 - Fill the piñata with your favorite candies or treats. 

Step 13 - Seal the hole with tape

Step 14 - Hang the piñata... and get cracking!
