How To Stylishly Work More Storage Space Into Your Home Renovation
May is national Remodeling Month! Whether you're planning a move or just want to brush up your house with a quick home renovation, having enough storage space is always a problem. "When it comes to space saving and redecorating, there are three big trends we're seeing," says Ginny Snook Scott, California Closets Chief Design Officer. First up: the man cave. "This is all about creating space for a media center and music for the man in your life," says Ginny.
Another big trend? "The Carrie Bradshaw dream closet with the dressing room and everything that every little girl has always wanted," she says. And finally, the home office that incorporates guest room accommodations such as a wall bed is also in high demand. "These are all great features that'll not only make your home more valuable for the future, but more enjoyable right now," explains Ginny.
When choosing materials for new closets, storage nooks or media centers, consider using materials that have a beautiful rich color or interesting texture, such as eco-resin or treated wood. "This adds a lot of style to your home, but it's easy to transition out and put a more neutral finish in when you resell the house," explains Ginny.
And when you're finally ready to make the renovation a reality, don't be so quick to cut costs. "A custom storage solution can often be just a little bit more or even the same as a do-it-yourself program. In fact, Consumer Reports just noted that the number one reason to not do a do-it-yourself solution is due to the cost. We also find that those products are often inferior. Working with a custom company can allow you to create a solution that accommodates all your needs," says Ginny. For example, if you are building a media center, a custom design could accommodate changing technology over time, yet also fit the space and style that you need right now.
