It's National Home Remodeling Month. Not sure if you're ready for a residence revamp? California Closets' Ginny Snook Scott has the answers to the most popular home refurbishing questions and offers up ideas to get you started.
What are some reasons to remodel?

The two main reasons people remodel is to increase the value of their home for resale or to make the space a little bit more personalized, and sometimes it's a combination of both. If you are looking to do either of these things, the perfect way to start is by creating more storage. Ginny explains, "One of the things we found in a recent survey is over 75% of people find that storage is very important when looking for a new home...and one of the top three things that people are looking for in a new home."

When is the best time to remodel?

Spring is a great time to start a remodeling project because that's usually when you start pulling everything out and getting organized la Spring cleaning. It makes it an ideal time to assess how you want to improve your home.

Is DIY the best way to go?

"We find that 50% of people find their DIY solution is disorganized in less than three months later," says Ginny, adding that when it comes to a big project, it's better to call in a professional. "California Closets can come out and work with you to create a beautiful space," she says.

What are the emerging trends this year?

You always want to make a renovation aesthetically pleasing. On trend this year are beautiful details, such as handles and knobs, for instance, with beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay or metal finishes. "Another great item we are starting to see in different designs is this beautiful repurposed leather belting," says Ginny. It's a stylish application that you can put into your closet, or you can put it into a home office to add a personalized touch to the room.

What are some popular remodeling cues?

Taking cues from the famed Milan Furniture Fair, Ginny says beiges and greys in cabinetry are headed stateside. Try the trend in closets, media centers or home offices. "Another thing that we are seeing is the use of lighting," she says. Lighting can be used in multiple ways, such as in shoe shelves, cabinets for bags, personal items or a illuminated vanity.

To go contemporary or traditional?

You don't have to choose! "A lot of times people aren't quite sure of what style they prefer," says Ginny, "Don't be afraid to mix the two, using different finishes and colors, shapes and sizes to create the space that feels uniquely yours."

Where to go for decorating inspiration?

Ginny says magazines are a fabulous place to start. You can also tap online resources such as Pinterest, and of course www.californiaclosets.com always has great ideas.
