Betsey Johnson Spring 2013: The Birthday Bash Of The Year!
Betsey Johnson fashion shows are always one of the hottest tickets during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She blares music that just makes you want to groove and books models who aren't afraid to dance down the runway, which is exactly what Betsey is all about--an unabashed, confident, laissez-les-bons-temps-roulez attitude.
For her Spring 2013 ready-to-wear fashion show, she really outdid herself, turning it into the party of the season to celebrate her 70th birthday. "Tonight is all about me! It starts with a big retrospective of four and a half decades of work," the designer told us.
The show kicked off with gal pal Cyndi Lauper singing "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and featured a whopping 90 pieces, including vintages numbers from each decade since the 1960s.
There was everything you'd expect from Betsey Johnson: princess dresses, bright colors, funky coats, studded miniskirts and even Mini Mouse sleepwear. To make the show even more chaotic-in-a-good way, some models came down the runway flopping around in flippers and floaties, one pushed a baby carriage, and one even cradled her pet pig.
And what birthday celebration wouldn't be complete without confetti, balloons and a huge birthday cake, out of which popped Betsey's daughter, Lulu. "This is really about a party. You know, it's Betsey. She's youthful. She's fun. And so this is just textured crazy hair, which shows personality. The clothes are crazy. Betsy's crazy. The hair is crazy," says hairstylist Jon Reyman, who crimped and teased the models hair into a great big head of funky frizz. "It's the big Betsy birthday bonanza bash.
It's the last show that I could ever do like this," said Johnson, who ended the show, as usual, doing her acrobatic splits on the catwalk. Despite her company filing for bankruptcy earlier this year, we don't see Betsey Johnson slowing down at all!
