National Cat Day is October 29th. To celebrate the cats in our lives, here are some interesting characteristics about this curious animal.
On average, an adult cat can jump five or six times its height. That's about 4-5 feet.
Most cats have eighteen toes. They have five toes on each of their front feet and four on the back.
A house cat can run up to 30 mph.
Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping. That works out to be between 13-16 hours a day.
A female cat can become pregnant throughout most of its life. Its gestation period is about two months. That means a female cat can birth as many as five litters a year.
House cats and tigers share about 95.6% of the same genetic makeup. They share traits such as stalking prey and pouncing.
Cats have a heightened sense of smell and sound. A cat's inner ears may sense a sudden fall in atmospheric pressure, allowing it to detect thunderstorms before they happen.
Cats cannot taste sweetness. They are among the only mammals lacking the sweet gene.
Curiosity is part of a cat's survival instinct and is used to inspect its surroundings. It may also explain the tendency of cats to jump on high places to scope out their surroundings from above. Cats also love boxes and tight spaces to hide from prey and prevent larger animals from reaching them.
A cat's brain structure is about 90 percent similar to humans.
