Looking to pull off a picture-perfect picnic? In honor of National Picnic Day (April 23) here are some pointers you need to know before packing your basket and heading out.
Picking the Basket
Keep in mind material, style, compartments and insulation to fit your needs. If you want to hike to a mountain summit you need more than just a handle. If you’re traveling for a while to get to your destination choose something insulated.
Pack Light
Picnics are supposed to be relaxing and care-free so don’t overpack. More things mean more to carry and more to clean up. To avoid bringing too much, make sure you have just the right food proportions with minimal leftovers.
The Menu
When packing for your picnic bring things that won’t melt, no chocolate for instance and aren’t too sticky. Finger foods like cheese, small sandwiches and veggies are easy to eat. If you’re doing a salad or something that needs condiments pack them in small containers to avoid spills and messes.
Beyond the Food
Beyond food make sure you have disposable plates and utensils for easy cleanup. You can still make it fancy—with fancy champagne flutes etc..Speaking of clean up, make sure you have plenty of napkins and wet wipes on hand and a folded up garbage bag to throw everything away when you’re done. Don’t forget a blanket. Pick one that’s the right size for your party and can fold compactly. Pack it on the top of the basket, so that’s the first thing you lay down and have the rest follow. Depending on weather conditions you want to keep in mind you may need something to weight down your blanket to protect from wind. Lastly, don’t forget bug spray to keep insects from ruining your lovely spread.
Fun and Games
Bring along books, board games or cards to keep your camp entertained. You can even bring a little radio along to enjoy some music.
