Proper sunscreen storage is crucial for maintaining its usefulness and ensuring the active ingredients offer protection against harmful UV rays. By following these simple guidelines, you can maximize its shelf life and efficacy to enjoy activities with the confidence of well-protected skin.

Dos
Keep it Closed: A tightly sealed sunscreen bottle helps prevent exposure to air and moisture, which can compromise the formula's integrity.

Check the Date: Most sunscreens have a shelf life of about 2-3 years. Applying old sunscreen can lead to diminished sun protection, rendering it less effective. Regardless of the expiration date, throw it out if the ingredients have separated, changed color, look watery, or have a funky smell.

Don'ts
Expose it to Extreme Temperatures: High-temp locations, such as leaving it in your car, near a window, or in direct sunlight, can alter and degrade the composition of the active, protective qualities. It’s equally essential to avoid locations in freezing temps. Store it in a cool, dark place.

Transfer it to Another Container: It's best to keep your sunscreen in its original packaging, specifically designed to protect the active ingredients from heat and light. If you need to transfer it, like for traveling, use an airtight and opaque container.

Apply Near Open Flames: Sunscreens may contain flammable ingredients like alcohol, particularly formulas that can be sprayed out of a can or bottle. Check the label, and ensure the product is thoroughly rubbed in and dry before moving toward an open flame like a lit cigarette, grill, candle, or sparking source.
