At just 26 years of age, Korean-American designer, Andrew Kwon unveiled his first RTW collection at the Baccarat Hotel during New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023. We chatted with the emerging designer at the presentation of his eveningwear collection.
He told us his debut line was inspired by his love for the red carpet, referencing his earliest red carpet memory of Nicole Kidman in a Chanel No. 5 commercial. That glamour is reflected in his clothing, about which he said, “there’s a lot of glitter and shimmers. I think it’s very opulent.”
The recent Parsons School of Design | The New School graduate first found his passion for the world of luxury bridal and eveningwear through his various internships and tenures with Chloe, Vera Wang, Marchesa, and Nicolas Caito.
Following his graduation and presentation of his thesis collection, Kwon was approached by a former Dean of Parsons, Burak Cakmak and asked to represent Parsons in the annual Supima Design Competition. He established his namesake brand in 2020 and officially launched his first bridal collection in 2021.
“I always tell my brides to wear whatever they want,” Kwon told us. He incorporated color into his second bridal collection.
“I never think that there should be any rules to evening or bridal,” he said. “It’s 2022 now so I think there’s so many different opportunities. It’s your life. It’s your day and you get to make it what you want.”
