Derek Lam Fall 2013, Simply Perfect
Clothes are classic and not too complicated in Derek Lam's fall 2013 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
"He's really nailed it. He's so got what a woman wants to wear for fall. I loved the fact that there were key pieces in such a beautiful color palette. So it was happy to mix navy and black with cream. He put in a touch of camel," says Glenda Bailey, Editor in Chief, Harper's Bazaar.
From neutral colors to capes ... "His big message which I loved was these capes which I particularly liked when they are short to the waist and paired with baggy pants. I thought that looked really, really new," says Bailey.
Fashions aren't fussy but they are rich in detail like short sleeve dresses with fringe and toggle closure coats.
"I absolutely loved the short sleeve dress and who doesn't want a duffel coat when the weather gets bad?" says Bailey.
Luxury best describes his fabrics -- suede, macrame' panels and fur gets dipped in color by many designers for fall including Lam whose long burgundy vest rocks the runway.
"Theres a lot of texture in the woolens and the different fabrics that he used in the collection. We tried to mimic that in the hair. We are parting the hair in the middle and tucking it behind the ear with a kind of wavy texture," says hair stylist Orlando Pita.
Kinky hair is contrasted with smooth skin on the models.
"The skin will be a matte satin, impeccable finish, eyeshadow very mettalic, very shimmery, and the lips is a bronze burgundy and a touch of black. It's very chic and very elegant," said makeup artist Tom Pecheux.
There's no doubt, simple chic sportswear is Lam's speciality.
