For his debut collection, designer Michael Maccari went straight to the streets of New York City to find inspiration for Perry Ellis' sporty Spring line at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
"The inspiration came from the active guy in the city, and the environment of the city, [and] a lot of the linear elements of grids and architecture, and the lines that we see, and the intersections that we pass every day on the streets," shared the designer. The motif carries through his sleek suits, structural sweaters and strappy sandals.
SNL's Jay Pharoah was among the many scoping out the stylish menswear. "I'm trying to see the latest trends," says the comedian, "You know, I'm trying to stay hip with my clothing these days."
As for the collection's color palette..."Seasonless," says Maccari, "There [are] deep reds and blues, and then [it] works its way through into khakis, and then there is a lot of strong black and white present."
And even though Maccari is pushing Perry Ellis forward, he still wants to remain true to what the late designer would have done. "It's that idea of keeping that one foot in the past and keeping the brand's DNA alive, and then moving that forward," he says.
