With BBQ and entertaining season upon us, “America’s Bad Breath Doctor," Dr. Harold Katz, stopped by the LifeMinute studios to talk about the foods and drinks that can cause bad breath and the best stuff to fix it.

What bacteria causes bad breath? Anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria breed beneath the tongue's surface and often in the throat and tonsil area. The term "anaerobic" means living without oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria do not require oxygen to live. They occur naturally in the oral environment and aid in digestion by breaking down proteins into amino acids. As bacteria feast on proteins in the mouth, sulfur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat. Chemicals such as cadaverine and putrescine are produced in the process, both of which smell very bad.

Dr. Harold Katz created TheraBreath advanced oral care products to combat bad breath to help his teenage daughter, who suffered from it. TheraBreath doesn't mask bad breath with heavy flavors or powerful odors like other products on the market. Instead, it uses the power of oxygen to target bad-breath-causing bacteria.

While he was here, the doctor bit into an onion and then breathed into a Halimeter machine to measure the amount of sulfur before and after swishing with the TheraBreath mouthwash to show its effectiveness.
