According to the CDC, most Americans consume too much sodium and the biggest culprits are processed foods and straight salt. Health/nutrition expert, Joy Bauer, shares three super simple ways to cut sodium and enhance the health of your heart.
Enjoy Your Sandwich Open-Face
Ditch that top slice of bread on your sandwiches and burgers a few times each week and you will save yourself a lot of sodium. Sodium is lurking in bread so when you lose the top slice you can better manage your blood pressure.
Swap the Salt Shaker for Spices
When cooking, use alternatives to replace or reduce the amount of salt you use, such as garlic, citrus juice, spices or salt-free seasonings, such as Dash. Just a pinch of this salt-free seasoning will give you a more flavorful dish. There’s a wide range of dash salt-free seasonings available, so you can find a flavor for anything you’re cooking! You can find Dash at most supermarkets and grocers for around $3 a bottle.
Incorporate a Produce Item with Each Meal
Produce is high in volume and low in calories so it fills us up without filling us out. It helps us to manage our weight, which is vital for heart health. Vegetables and fruit also shower our bodies with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, all things that promote a healthy ticker and keep us functioning and feeling our best. Lastly, produce is loaded with potassium, which is a key nutrient for managing blood pressure.
