At-Home Fitness: How to Plank

No equipment needed for this core strengthening move

A plank is a low impact exercise that is a serious core burner. Holding in the plank position engages multiple muscles at once which not only makes your torso stronger but can help you lose belly fat. Best news – it’s one of the easiest moves to accomplish all by yourself at-home. Plus, it never gets old. Once you’ve easily achieved the position, keep challenging yourself. Start with 15 seconds, then increase to 30, 60 and so on. 74 year-old Cher says she can plank for 5 minutes!


1. If you don’t have a mat find a flat, soft surface
2. Begin in prone position with hands directly under your shoulders pushing into ground
3. Mind your form keeping your back, buttocks in a straight line, completely flat
4. Keep everything tight, squeeze your core, if you feel yourself shaking—that’s a good thing…you’re working it

If staying straight is too difficult to start, modify the plank by keeping your knees on the ground.
