Yes, there is such a thing as Menopause Awareness Month, and it's happening now. So, what do you need to know? A lot -- and Dr. Shannon Chavez and Dr. Donnica Moore can break it all down for you.
What are the symptoms of menopause?
Get ready for hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and sleep disturbances. Lovely. But wait, there's more! "The one thing most people don't know about, and certainly don't talk about, is vaginal dryness, which can lead to painful sex due to menopause," says Dr. Moore.
But what can you do about it?
"The biggest barriers to talking about painful sex due to menopause are sexual self-esteem and shame," explains Dr. Chavez, "So, really, what we want to do is to invite women to take the pledge to talk about painful sex due to menopause with their doctors, therapists and their partners." If that sounds like an invitation to a really awkward party, you may be right, but taking the first step only takes a quick click. "We've teamed up with Shionogi, the makers of Osphena, the only non-estrogen oral preparation to treat moderate to painful sex after menopause, to support WomenTakeCharge.com," says Dr. Moore, "For the whole month of September, Shionogi is donating five dollars to the Women's Health Foundation for every woman who just clicks on the pledge."
Cool. So, what's the pledge?
"The pledge is a commitment to talk about the symptoms of menopause with your girlfriends, your sisters, your colleagues, certainly your partner, and most importantly, your doctor," explains Dr. Moore. And don't panic -- you don't have to talk to them all at the same time! But you can get the conversation started and help other women to do the same.
