International Self-Care Day is celebrated on July 24. The four dimensions of self-care are generally considered physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. Here are different ways to practice self-care that explore these areas.
Eat Healthy
About 95% of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in our body, is estimated to be found in the gut. Lower levels may be linked to depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Feeding your gut with probiotics, commonly found in fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, pickles, and sauerkraut, may help boost serotonin levels in your body.
Break a Sweat
Exercising releases feel-good endorphins, natural brain chemicals, which can heighten your sense of well-being. Doing at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical exercise may significantly improve depression or anxiety symptoms and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Regular physical activity can also improve your ability to do everyday activities and decrease the risk of falls.
Socialize
Just like your relationship with yourself is significant, so are your social connections with others. Positive social activities help build your network of people to support you in good times and challenging times. And research shows that social connectedness can lead to longer life, better health, and improved well-being.
Prioritize R&R
Among other advantages, resting and relaxing are associated with reducing blood pressure, relieving pain, and lessening anxiety. R&R looks different for everyone, but it’s vital to prioritize it in your everyday life. It can be meditating, journaling, streaming a movie, listening to music, walking in the park, soaking in a bath, or getting a massage.
Tap into Your Spiritual Side
Being spiritual can provide a sense of purpose, belonging, and hope. Consider joining or reconnecting with an organization or faith-based community that shares your thoughts and beliefs. For some, spirituality and faith aren’t necessarily connected with religion. Find a cause that matters to you, like fostering an animal or volunteering at a food bank. Doing so can grow your community and connect you with people of shared spiritual interests.
Get Your Zzzs
Getting enough sleep can offer many benefits, including getting along better with people and getting sick less often. Try going to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends. A consistent schedule has been linked with improved sleep. Consider using a sleep calculator to find your ideal slumber and wake times.
